About Jason Tse
Jason Tse is a Hawaii-based composer and multi-instrumentalist who has dedicated years to exploring the musical possibilities of the ukulele. With a Master’s degree in Music Composition from the University of Hawaii at Manoa—the cultural heart of ukulele tradition—Jason brings both academic rigor and creative passion to his teaching and composing.
As a performer and composer, Jason has pushed the boundaries of what the ukulele can do. His original compositions, including works for orchestral percussion and ukulele as well as a four-instrument duet for 2 flutes, saxophone, and ukulele experiment with the unique musical color of the instrument. His extended play, Featuring Jason EP, blends folk-pop sensibilities with contemporary classical techniques, demonstrating the ukulele’s versatility beyond traditional Hawaiian music. His research presentations at the University of California, Riverside showcases his innovative approach to the instrument and his commitment to expanding its repertoire.
Jason’s teaching philosophy is rooted in accessibility and encouragement. Whether working with first-time players in Beijing or mentoring university students, he believes the ukulele’s approachable nature makes it the perfect gateway to musical expression. His experience as a volunteer ukulele instructor and peer mentor has shaped his patient, student-centered teaching style that meets learners where they are. When he is not composing or performing, Jason can be found exploring the vibrant music scene of Honolulu, drawing inspiration from the islands’ rich musical heritage while looking toward the future of ukulele music.
